UNDERCOVER!

(I'm still working on this whole working on an album cover thing. And yes, I made his mouth myself.)

Okay, so let me start off by saying I really love a good cover. This was definitely my theme. Let's do this one again in two weeks.

01. The Zombies -- The Look of Love (Dusty Springfield/Burt Bacharach cover)

A jazzy opener because I'm a jazzy kind of girl. Colin Blunstone could sing me the phone book and I'd still get all weak in the knees. And it's weird because I'm not normally into old dudes. It's his voice, I promise. Just his voice.

02. The Jesus & Mary Chain -- Surfin' USA (Beach Boys cover)

Do they surf in Scotland?

03. Lemonheads -- Different Drum (Linda Rondstat/Stone Poneys cover)

Evan Dando's kind of a douche. I like this song though. Plus Linda Rondstat was kind of a babe before that whole thyroid problem.

04. Shonen Knife -- Top of the World (Carpenters cover)

'Japanglish' accents at its ooey-gooey-sugary-sweet best. A cover done in typical Shonen style.

05. Françoise Hardy -- Suzanne (Leonard Cohen cover)

Sometimes I feel like the best part of Leonard Cohen's music is the lyrics, but then Homegirl Hardy over here sings his stuff in some language I don't understand, and the song is still haunting in the best way possible.

06. Rivers Cuomo -- Don't Worry Baby (Beach Boys cover)

I always not-so-secretly root for Rivers, and this is a pretty decent and equally dreamy cover from one of his home recordings albums. Give it to your next girlfriend. She'll dig you for life.

07. The Dandy Warhols -- Ohio (Neil Young cover)

I didn't know this was a Neil Young song when I was an oblivious youngin and then my dad overheard me playing it and randomly knew all the words. This is for you, Dad.

08. Jay Reatard -- Gamma Ray (Beck cover)

I just like how Jay Reatard's music always sounds like a shotty cassette bootleg. Here's a shotty cassette bootleg-esque cover of one of Beck's more recent singles.

09. Letters to Cleo -- Dreams (Fleetwood Mac cover)

Shut up. This is cute.

10. Nick Cave -- Disco 2000 (Pulp cover)

Nick Cave rocking your world once again with his trademark absurdity. An airy cover, complete with back-up singers and everything.

11. Casiotone for the Painfully Alone / Dear Nora -- Hot Boyz (Missy Elliott cover)

A cover for everybody!!!

12. The Slits -- I Heard It Through The Grapevine (Marvin Gaye cover)

I've always considered this such a perfect cover song. Punchy and punky Ari Up and company doing Motown? Genius. GENIUS.

13. Giant Drag -- Wicked Game (Chris Isaak cover)

I normally hate this song, but then Annie Hardy covered it and now I don't feel so bad. Hearing this song performed by a girl almost makes me feel like I've stumbled upon someone's diary. Giant Drag's always been good at delivering the angst.

14. Teenage Fanclub -- Here Comes Your Man (Pixies cover)

I love Teenage Fanclub. I love this song. I very much approve of their union.

15. Cibo Matto -- About a Girl (Nirvana cover)

I collect Nirvana covers like Lindsay Lohan collects detrimental life choices. This is my favorite one. (More Japanglish!)

16. The Pogues -- Maggie May (Rod Stewart cover)

THIS RULES!!!!!!! And consequently makes me want to drink a pint of Guinness. And I don't even like beer.

17. Big Star -- Femme Fatale (Nico cover)

The #1 reason to track down their Third/Sister Lovers album if you haven't already. So dreamy.

18. Fehlfarben -- We Do Wie Du (The Monks cover)

Back during WWII, a bunch of American GIs stationed in Germany form a band. A couple decades later, a German post-punk band covers them. This song makes me happy, and I still don't have the slightest clue what they're singing. (Germanglish!)

19. M. Ward -- Green River (CCR cover)

I've never been particularly interested in M. Ward's stuff, but for some reason, I really like this cover.

20. Shop Assistants -- What A Way To Die (Pleasure Seekers cover)

Girls ruckusly covering a ruckus-named band's song about drinking up a ruckus!

21. Minor Threat -- Good Guys Don't Wear White (The Standells cover)

Oh no, that beer craving's coming back.

22. The Ramones -- Have You Ever Seen The Rain (CCR cover)

What you'd expect of the Ramones when covering a song except now it's my favorite CCR song.

23. Paul Anka -- Jump (Van Halen cover)

This entire album of covers from him is amazing. It'd be too easy for him to approach this ironically. This is 100% unabashed love for rock music coming from the coolest dude my mom's liked since my dad.

I forgot about that Big Star cover, it's a good one. Have you Owen (Mike Kinsella) cover of the same song? It's in a similar fashion, but I like it just as much, if not more. Regardless, it's one of my favorite Velvet Underground songs, even if sung by Nico (I've never liked her).

Fun fact: Lou Reed wrote "Femme Fatale" at Andy Warhol's request to pen a song about Edie Sedgwick.

Yeah, I was going to throw out that I actually prefer the Big Star cover to Nico's original, but I didn't want to step on any Velvet Underground loyalist toes.

Wait, who's Andy Warhol? He's that guy that's sometimes on Conan, right?

No, no, no, that's Andy Griffith. Andy Warhol is the D-list comic that just got arrested for grabbing someone's junk.

Fun Fact #2: Both of the aforementioned Andys appeared on the Conan O'Brien episode of Zach Galifianakis's "Between Two Ferns."
